Keeping your little one's toasty this winter!

Winter is rolling in, and if you're anything like us, keeping the kids warm (without freezing the bank account) is top of the to-do list. Here are some tried-and-true tips to make your home snug while keeping costs low.

Winter is rolling in, and if you're anything like us, keeping the kids warm (without freezing the bank account) is top of the to-do list. But don’t worry – you don’t need to blast the heating all day or spend a fortune on gadgets to keep the little ones cosy. Here are some tried-and-true tips to make your home snug while keeping costs low and safety high.

Layer Up!

Thermal layers are a great way to keep babies warm. A few thin layers work better than one thick one because the air between them acts as insulation.

A snowsuit with booties is perfect for babies, and hats that tie under the chin help keep them in place. Gloves on a string or with elastic at the wrist are also handy to prevent them from falling off. A footmuff for the pram is essential in winter, keeping your little one snug, and you can add a blanket inside for extra warmth.

For babies under three months, swaddling in the pram helps keep their hands warm. For older babies, gloves and tucked-in blankets work well. Just make sure everything is secure so they can’t kick it off!

The NHS advises dressing babies in one more layer than you’d wear, but be careful not to overheat them. Check their neck or back to make sure they’re not too hot, especially when in a pram or car seat. For safe sleep, the NHS recommends keeping the baby’s room at 16-20°C and using a light blanket or baby sleeping bag instead of heavy quilts or pillows.

Get Crafty With Draughts

You don’t need to be a DIY whizz to block out those chilly draughts! A rolled-up towel under the door works just as well as fancy draught excluders. If you’ve got gaps around the windows, try sticking bubble wrap or even clear film over the panes. It’s temporary, affordable, and makes a surprising difference.

Warm the Room, Not the House

If you’re using heaters, stick to heating one room where everyone gathers – it’s much cheaper than trying to warm the whole house. A plug-in electric heater can work wonders, but safety first:

  • Keep them away from little hands and anything flammable (curtains, clothes, toys).
  • Don’t leave heaters on overnight or when you’re out of the room.
  • Never dry clothes directly on a heater – that’s a big fire risk.

Cosy Little Tricks

  • Close the curtains early: Thick ones can block out the cold coming through the windows.
  • Use rugs or blankets: If you’ve got hard floors, a few rugs or even an old blanket can help keep the chill off tiny feet.
  • Huddle up: There’s no shame in a family movie night under one big blanket. The shared warmth is priceless (and the snuggles are even better)..

Winter doesn’t have to mean sky-high energy bills or chilly toes. A bit of planning, some safety smarts, and a little creativity can keep your home warm and inviting all season long. Here’s to a snug and budget-friendly winter!
