Before you start making up bottles, here’s what you’ll need for safe, smooth bottle-feeding:
Sterilised bottles
A microwave steam steriliser or sterilising tablets and dedicated bottle sterlising bucket
A clean bottle brush and teat brush
A kettle for boiling tap water
Baby formula (Bonya, naturally 💚)
Having the right gear makes preparing a feed quick and easy when your little one is hungry!
Can you prepare baby formula in advance?
If you’re wondering "can I make up formula bottles in advance?", here’s the answer:
It’s best to prepare bottles fresh whenever you can.
But real life happens. So if needed:
Freshly made formula can sit at room temperature for up to 2 hours (if untouched).Once feeding starts, use it within 1 hour.
If you refrigerate, store it at the back of the fridge and use within 24 hours (NHS advice).
Never reheat leftover formula — if baby doesn’t finish, it’s time to bin it.
Keeping formula fresh helps protect your baby from bacteria growth.
How to sterilise baby bottles before making formula
Before preparing baby formula, it’s essential to sterilise baby bottles and feeding equipment. Here’s how:
Clean first: Separate your bottle components and wash all parts in hot soapy water straight after feeding.
Sterilise: here are some popular ways to sterilise your bottle parts:
Cold water sterilising – soak bottles in sterilising solution for at least 30 minutes (change daily).
Steam sterilising – pop into a steriliser with bottles and teats facing downward. Following the instructions on your steam steriliser.
Boiling – boil safe-to-sterilise items in a large pan for 10 minutes.
Always leave equipment in the steriliser or covered until you need it, and wash your hands before assembling bottles.
Pro tip: Keeping things super clean helps protect your baby's delicate immune system – especially in the first year.

How to make up baby formula: 7 simple steps
Making up a formula bottle might feel like a lot at first, but you’ll be a pro in no time. Always wash your hands before you start making a feed and sterilise the surface where you will prepare baby's milk!
Step 1: Boil fresh tap water in a kettle. (Always fresh each time – we’re keeping it safe!)
Step 2: Let it cool down to around 70°C. (Give it about 30 minutes – time for a cuppa for you, maybe?)
Step 3: Measure out your water first, just like the formula instructions say. Water first, powder second – trust us on this one!
Step 4: Now add your formula powder, following the pack instructions. No guessing games here and no need for an extra one for luck. Make sure those scoops are level and always use the scoop that comes with the formula.
Step 5: Pop on a sterilised teat and cap, and give it a good shake!
Step 6: Let the milk cool down to baby-perfect body temperature: around 36.5–37.5°C.
Step 7: Test a few drops on the inside of your wrist – it should feel warm, not hot. Then you’re good to go!
