Choosing Cheap Baby Formula Doesn’t Mean Bad Parenting: Debunking the 'Expensive = Quality' Myth

Choosing Cheap Baby Formula Doesn’t Mean Bad Parenting: Debunking the 'Expensive = Quality' Myth

Choosing a cheaper baby formula doesn’t make you a bad parent, and it definitely doesn’t mean your baby is missing out. This blog tackles the myth that expensive means better when it comes to infant formula, and explains why all UK formulas, including affordable options like Bonya, are safe and nutritionally complete.

Let’s clear something up: choosing a cheap baby formula doesn’t mean you’re cutting corners, and it absolutely doesn’t make you a bad parent. The idea that price equals quality when it comes to infant formula? That’s a myth, and it’s time we bust it.

At Bonya, we believe better formula should be accessible to every family. All baby formula sold in the UK, whether it’s a supermarket own-brand or a big-name label, must meet strict nutritional standards. So yes, a more affordable formula like Bonya is just as nutritionally complete and safe as more expensive alternatives.

So why are we still made to feel guilty for spending less?

The truth is, the formula industry hasn’t always made things easy to understand. With so many options, flashy claims, and premium prices, it’s no wonder parents feel overwhelmed. That’s what we call The Formula Fog, and we’re here to help clear it.

Follow along as we clear the fog on how to choose the right formula, the differences in formulas and how to make a switch.

How To Choose The Right Baby Formula

If you’re wondering how to choose baby formula, you’re not alone. “Which baby formula is best?” is one of the most searched questions by new parents.

The good news? You don’t need to break the bank to find the right formula for your baby.

All infant formulas sold in the UK are nutritionally complete and safe. They must all follow the European Commission guidelines on compositional standards and nutritional requirements.

At the heart of every infant formula are three essentials – protein, fats and carbs. They’re the building blocks your baby needs to grow, wriggle and take on the world (one nap at a time).

Infant formulas are packed with a carefully balanced blend of vitamins and minerals – designed to support the growth of your little ones bones, power their immune system and keep their little engine running.

There are some variations in recipes and ingredients, but essentially all UK infant formulas provide the basic nutrition your baby needs to thrive.

When choosing baby formula, always consider your baby’s needs first, not brand marketing or what ‘Susan’ down the road recommends.

Their digestive system matures as they grow and you may find that issues such as reflux, gas and constipation hit at any moment - in these instances it’s time to book in a visit to your GP for professional advice.

If you’re not a first time parent, one thing to also note, what worked for your other kids might not work for your youngest!

Is There Really A Difference Between Formula Brands?

As we’ve touched on, all UK baby formula must meet the same core nutritional standards. That means cheaper baby formulas, yes, including Bonya, are still packed with everything your baby needs to grow and thrive.

Some formulas can differ based on the ingredients they add that are not legally required such as the addition of GOS and FOS. You may find some brands also use cheaper or more readily available ingredients such as skim milk, palm oil, soy and fish oil.

Here at Bonya, we’re proud to offer affordable baby formula without compromising on the quality of our ingredients. That’s what makes Bonya a formula to feel good about. You won’t find palm oil in our recipe, nor soy or fish oil - we use a plant-based source of DHA instead. Bonya also includes milk fats.

Can you switch baby formula brands?

It’s safe to switch between baby formula brands, including from a premium brand to a more affordable one like Bonya. We’d always recommend chatting through any changes with yoru health visitor or GP first. Keep an eye on how your baby reacts if you do make a switch, some might take a little time to adjust - 1 to 2 weeks is common.

Check out our guide on switching formulas here.

To switch formula smoothly:

1. Introduce the new formula gradually by introducing a feed of the new formula one bottle at a time. Increasing the number of feeds using the new formula day by day until you’ve fully switched over.

2. Watch for any signs of discomfort or change in digestion.

3. Don’t stress. If your baby is fed, growing, and content—you’re doing great.

Let’s stop judging parents by the label on their formula tin

In a cost-of-living crisis, being financially savvy is smart parenting. Buying affordable baby formula doesn’t mean you love your baby any less. It means you’re doing your best, and we see you.

Bonya is here to support parents with honest pricing, high quality, and no judgment. Because feeding your baby should feel good. Not confusing. Not guilt-ridden. Just good.

So next time someone makes you question your choice? Tell them you’ve done your research. You’ve read the label. And you’ve chosen a baby formula that works for your baby, and your budget.

That’s not bad parenting. That’s brilliant parenting.
